As the nation’s custodians of remembrance, The British Legion has called upon sport throughout the UK to honour those who fell in the Battle of Somme 100 years ago.
The Professional Golfers’ Association has wholeheartedly embraced this initiative. In addition to those who were lost at The Somme, they are endeavouring to identify all Golf Professionals and Assistants who enlisted to fight throughout the Great War of 1914-1919 and made the ultimate sacrifice for King & Country.
Research has uncovered that David ‘Sonny’ Grant Jnr who held a Golf Professional license at North Berwick Golf Club prior to being conscripted into the Royal Army Service Corps. At the age of 36 he died during his return from action on 6th July 1919 and is buried at Mezargues War Cemetery, Marseilles, France.
In honouring, and remembering David Grant Jnr, we will be flying a poppy flag on the 18th green to join all the other golf clubs in remembering the loss of their Golf Professionals who went to war and never returned.
